Governor of West Kalimantan: Legal Study of China – Indonesia Trade is Required

PONTIANAK – Governor of West Kalimantan, H. Sutarmidji, S.H., M.Hum., officially opened the International Law Seminar. The theme of seminar is “Innovation of Law Academic of China-Indonesia in the Context of Belt and Road Initiative” held by Tanjungpura University Pontianak.

The purpose of the seminar is improving the quality of West Kalimantan human resources by enhancing the good education service, by strengthening the international cooperation by establishing the foreign language center.

In the remarks, Governor of West Kalimantan appreciates the agenda. He expected that the agenda can give benefits to the China and Indonesia relationship. It relates to the highest export and trade in West Kalimantan is China.

“Because of the relationship, the legal aspect is not seen well the difference between two countries, and also the trade between West Kalimantan and China,” he expressed at the Rectorate Building of Tanjungpura University, Pontianak, Saturday (3/20/2021).

The more open a country, the more needs it will be, such as mineral and other necessities. Therefore, it needs the legal study to protect the relationships between two countries.

“We cannot hurriedly take action when the problems happened. We should see the law systems of China and Indonesia that needed legal studies to anticipate. We don’t expect there is a legal problem between two countries,” Governor of West Kalimantan said.

In Indonesian legal system, we put customs and habits role forward. If we see from the context of China investment to West Kalimantan, it relates to the customs and habits problems.

“So the problem is not about positive legality, but the customs habits law. I warn to this case, in the future it will affect the continuity of trade between West Kalimantan and China,” Sutarmidji said.

Governor of West Kalimantan expects that West Kalimantan and China can widen the relationships in economic and culture sectors. Moreover, there is 8% of China ethnic in West Kalimantan.

“They are preserving their culture and they are also the traders, both local and international, therefore we need discussion such this agenda to prevent the problems related to legal aspects,” he ended.

In the same occasion, the Rector of Tanjungpura University Pontianak, Prof. Dr. Garuda Wiko, S.H., M.Si., FCBArb said that we need to arrange the legal aspects with the experts to anticipate the supported case in trade, culture and other sectors.

“We should comprehend the legal problems, especially providing the legal experts to figure out the comparison of legal system, justice system, dispute system, etc,” he described.

In this case, the Rector of Tanjungpura University will be encouraging the students exchange between Guangxi and Tanjungpura University, in order to comprehend the legal system of both countries.

“We will encourage the more students’ exchange, and then in the curriculum, we will put the law comparison, therefore we will understand more. Then the students of both countries can comprehend the law, justice and dispute resolution systems,” he ended.
